A color poster for the Christmas number of *The Century* magazine, its title reading "The Century for Xmas," carries the initials L.J.R. in the corner. G.H. Buek & Co. printed it in New York around 1895 for The Century Co., which used bold lithographed posters like this to sell its issues in shop windows and on newsstands. Holiday numbers were a major sales push for magazines of the period, so the poster shows how publishers marketed the season as much as the fiction inside. Its Christmas celebration subject also offers a glimpse of how the holiday was pictured for American consumers in the 1890s.
