Small parcels of tobacco, candy, writing paper, and other comforts were often packed for American servicemen at Christmas, and this glass negative records one such effort. The record gives no date, but the George Grantham Bain Collection holds news photographs from roughly 1900 to the 1920s, a period that included the First World War, when charitable groups and civilians sent gift boxes overseas. The title comes from caption information the Bain News Service recorded, which the Library of Congress notes has not been independently verified. Glass negatives like this one were the standard working medium for press photographers of the time, so the image also shows how news pictures were made before film became common.
