This poster asks Americans to finish their Christmas shopping well ahead of the holiday, with the blunt slogan "Do it now." Illustrator Haskell Coffin designed it in 1918, when the United States was in the final year of World War I and the federal government was managing the nation's railroads. Holiday shopping at the end of the year put heavy strain on freight and mail service, so officials wanted shoppers to spread their purchases out over the autumn. The poster shows how wartime concerns about transportation and labor reached into ordinary domestic habits such as gift buying.
