Under the heading "South America," this 1919 lithograph promises recruits "ample shore leave for inland sights," a pitch that treated the Navy as a way to see the world. The campaign ran just after the First World War, when the service still needed men and used travel and adventure to draw them in. The artist, James H. Daugherty, was one of the illustrators who produced Navy recruiting art in those years. The poster's printed stamp shows it was also distributed through a Navy recruiting station in Wilmington, Delaware, which points to how widely these images circulated.
