A Roman cardinal in New York is the detail that sets this glass negative apart from the many Bain News Service portraits of visiting dignitaries. Cardinal Vincenzo Vannutelli was a senior prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, and his 1910 stop in the United States drew strong attention from the city's Catholic community. The Bain News Service, a commercial agency that sold pictures to newspapers, documented such arrivals quickly, and its titles were often written from caption cards rather than checked against other sources, so the name and date are worth confirming before citing them.
