Currier & Ives drew on Daniel Defoe's 1719 novel *Robinson Crusoe* for this lithograph, which shows the castaway not with his famous goats or parrot in a jungle clearing but surrounded by a crowd of tame animals gathered around his island home. The print belongs to the firm's long run of comic and sentimental lithographs from the 1870s, when the New York shop turned out cheap, colorful images for a large middle-class audience. Such pictures often played on the idea of the solitary man tamed by domestic routine, and the catalog entry that accompanies this print helps place it among the firm's many works on popular stories and rural themes.
