Lithographs like this one, with hand coloring added after printing, were a popular and relatively affordable way to bring images into American homes in the 1870s. The title, "Moses," points to the Hebrew Bible figure who led the Israelites out of Egypt and received the law on Mount Sinai, though the record does not say which scene or composition this sheet depicts. The print was published and printed by H. Schile of New York, a firm working in the city's busy lithographic trade. Its placement under Books suggests it may have been issued as an illustration or as a standalone religious image, and the hand-applied color is worth a close look, since it shows how each sheet could vary in tone and detail.
