The title pairs two names from ancient Greece: Homer, the poet traditionally credited with the *Iliad* and *Odyssey*, and Plato, the philosopher whose dialogues shaped Western thought. Their works were read in American schools and libraries through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when a classical education was a mark of learning. Pictures in this group often grew out of book illustration, where artists supplied images for editions and anthologies of the classics. The record does not say which book or edition this picture was made for, so its exact purpose is unclear. Still, it belongs to a wider tradition in which printed pages carried both the texts and the images that helped readers picture them.
