Its title alone, *God Bless Our School*, makes a sentimental appeal, and the lithograph is one of many scenes the New York firm of Currier & Ives issued from its shop at 125 Nassau Street. The firm produced thousands of prints like it for a broad middle-class market that hung them in parlors and homes. Schools and childhood were popular subjects in the decades after the Civil War, when public education was spreading and the schoolhouse was often a village's most important gathering place. The hand coloring added to this print reflects the labor that went into the firm's output and is worth noticing alongside its sentimental tone.
