The only label on this plate is "NC-2," a title the Library of Congress notes is unverified and taken from the negative or its caption card, so the image's subject can't be pinned down from the record. It is one of the glass negatives in the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers and magazines in the early twentieth century. Glass plates of this small size were the standard working medium for press photographers of that period, valued for their sharp detail and their ability to be printed quickly for publication. Because the date and place are missing, the plate is best read as a document of the agency's broader practice of covering the news of its time.
