This glass negative is titled for the launch of the *Strathnaver*, a name taken from a Scottish Highland glen and used by the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company for several of its liners. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data that Bain News Service applied to the negatives, so the exact vessel and occasion are open to question. Launch ceremonies were a staple of the Bain agency's work, which supplied New York newspapers with news photographs from the early 1900s through the 1920s. Pictures of this kind usually show the hull, the crowd, and the christening party, so the scene offers a useful view of shipbuilding ceremony in that era.
