This lithograph has no picture at all, only a blunt pair of phrases, "German slavery" on one side and "Liberty Bonds" on the other. The choice it offers is meant to read as a moral one. Dated 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, it belongs to the Liberty Loan campaigns, the government bond drives that asked ordinary citizens to help finance the war. Posters like this one cast buying a bond as a personal way of defending freedom, a message that reached workplaces, schools and storefronts across the country.
