This platinum print shows a young person posed beside a horse, a pairing that was a common subject for portrait photographers in the early 1900s, when horses still powered most transport and farm work. Platinum printing, which produces soft gray tones and a matte surface, was prized by serious photographers of the period, though its cost rose sharply during World War I and it fell out of use soon after. The Library of Congress catalogs the print as dating between 1904 and 1920 and received it through an exchange in 1980. Its unknown maker and exact setting are not recorded, so the image is best read as a document of how ordinary rural and urban childhood was pictured in those years.
