Few recruiting posters of the First World War name a particular officer, but this lithograph names Capt. Otho Cushing of the Aviation Section, U.S. Army, and promises mechanical training to those who enlist in the Air Service. The record dates it to 1919, after the armistice, yet its notes link the design to a French poster signed by Louis Flot in 1916, which advertised a special popular matinee to benefit war orphans. That connection between a French charity image and American recruiting is worth noting. The Air Service grew rapidly during the war, and posters like this one were a major way it sought mechanics and trainees.
