Louis C. Crampton of Michigan is known here only through this glass negative, which the National Photo Company made sometime between 1921 and 1922. The company, based in Washington, D.C., produced large numbers of portraits of public figures and visitors to the capital in the early twentieth century. Worth noticing is the plate itself, since the streaks and small blemishes come from the gradual breakdown of the original coating rather than from the photographer's choices, and they are part of the negative's physical history.
