This glass negative is a portrait labeled Carl E. Mapes, Mich., though the title comes from unverified data the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve. Mapes was a Grand Rapids figure who later served in the U.S. House of Representatives. The National Photo Company produced large numbers of portrait and news negatives in the early twentieth century, and this collection reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. The streaks and blemishes visible on the glass come from natural deterioration of the original coatings, a common condition for plates of this age.
