This glass negative is the only portrait in the set tied by its title to Michigan, identifying its subject as Carl E. Mapes of that state. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio that produced large numbers of news and portrait pictures in the early twentieth century, made it around 1921 or 1922, based on neighboring negatives in the same range. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Look for streaks and blemishes in the image, which the catalog attributes to natural deterioration of the original coating.
