The Rhön gliding competition, held each summer on the Wasserkuppe in the Rhön mountains of central Germany, was the proving ground for European glider design in the late 1920s and early 1930s, and this picture places a group of men from aeronautic organizations on that setting in 1930. They stand full-length in a single row, dressed in the suits and coats of the period, a formal record of the people who ran and promoted flight at a time when gliding was drawing crowds and attention across Germany. The original key to their names is written on the back of the print, which is part of the Ursinus Collection, a body of aviation material gathered by the German aviation historian Oskar Ursinus.
