Three pilots in evening dress at a Washington aviation ball make this group portrait stand apart from the usual flight-day photographs. Amelia Earhart, Elinor Smith, and Hiram Bingham are named in the record, and the image shows the aviation community socializing at a formal event around 1931. Earhart had gained national fame after her 1928 transatlantic passenger flight, and Smith was a young record-setting flier of the same period. Underwood & Underwood, a commercial press photography agency, produced the picture, which offers a glimpse of how the interwar flying world presented itself to the public.
