Students at a monotype caster and a type case, working in the printing shop of the Red Cross Institute for Crippled and Disabled Men in New York, are the focus of this 1919 halftone poster. The title, "Future members of the fourth estate," uses an old phrase for the press, and the pairing signals that the men were being trained for skilled trades in newspapers and print. The institute was set up to help wounded and disabled soldiers and sailors of World War I return to work, and its training shops offered practical instruction in fields like printing. The poster was part of an exhibit promoting that work, which also included the Red Cross Institute for the Blind.
