The poster's title poses a question, "Bonds - which?", and shows Uncle Sam with shackles, a pairing that makes a case for buying war bonds. It was first printed as a newspaper supplement in *The New York Evening Post*, which offered extra copies for ten cents each. Issued in 1917, after the United States entered the First World War that April, it belongs to the wartime effort to finance the conflict through public bond sales, which the government promoted through Liberty Loan campaigns. The lithograph is in color and was printed as a poster, so it was meant for display on the street as well as on the page.
