Bedford City, Virginia, in 1891 was the seat of Bedford County, a town that had only recently taken its new name from the older village of Liberty. The Norfolk and Western Railway's line through the town tied its farms, tobacco warehouses, and timber to markets east and west, while the Blue Ridge rising to the south shaped daily life and the summer traffic of visitors. Local life centered on the courthouse square, churches, schools, and the businesses that served the surrounding countryside. Residents of the day would have known the town mainly as the county's center for courts, commerce, and the Confederate memorial that stood among them, a reminder of how many local men had gone to war a generation earlier.

| Notes | An original bird's-eye view map of Bedford City, Virginia, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
