Buena Vista, Virginia, in 1891 was a young town on the Maury River in Rockbridge County, in the Shenandoah Valley. The place was still taking shape during the land and industrial boom of the 1880s, when promoters hoped rail service and river power would bring factories and new residents. Railroad lines running up the valley gave local farmers, lumber cutters, and small manufacturers a way to ship goods out, and the town's fortunes depended on those connections. Lexington, the county seat and home to Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, lay a short distance away and shaped much of the region's social and civic life. The map records the town as its builders hoped it would grow, with streets laid out ahead of the buildings that would fill them.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Buena Vista, Virginia, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
