Newport News, Virginia, in 1891 was a young town on the north shore of Hampton Roads, shaped largely by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, whose coal piers made it a shipping point for coal bound for northern and foreign markets. Collis P. Huntington's shipbuilding and dry dock company, founded in 1886, anchored the local economy and drew workers from across Virginia to its yards along the river. The town was still small enough that its streets and wharves could be recorded in full, while its population grew quickly as new houses and churches went up on land that had been farm and marsh only a few years earlier. Residents knew it as a railroad terminus and a shipyard town, with Fort Monroe across the roads giving the harbor a military presence. Steamers, schooners and tugs crowding the water defined daily life along its docks.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Newport News, Virginia, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
