Salt Lake City in 1891 was in the middle of a painful transition. Church leaders had issued the Manifesto in 1890, ending the public practice of plural marriage under heavy federal pressure, and the Edmunds-Tucker Act of 1887 had already seized much of the church's property. Non-Mormon businessmen, mining investors and federal officials had grown more influential as several rail lines made the city a regional shipping point for ore, livestock and freight. Electric streetcars were beginning to replace horse-drawn cars on the main streets, and the Salt Lake Temple, begun in 1853, was still under construction, two years from its dedication. Residents would have known their city as a Mormon headquarters that was being reshaped, sometimes against its will, by outside money and by the politics of Utah's long push toward statehood.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Salt Lake City, Utah, drawn in 1891. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives. Reproduced from the original in the Library of Congress collections. Printed to order on archival paper. Free shipping on all US orders.
