Salt Lake City in 1870 was the seat of Utah Territory and the center of a Latter-day Saint community that had settled the valley beginning in 1847. The transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit in 1869, and a rail line linking the city to Ogden that same year brought outside merchants, miners and federal officials into a town that had long supplied most of its own needs. More brick and stone were appearing on the main streets, and the Tabernacle, finished in 1867, anchored civic and religious life around Temple Square, where the great temple was still decades from completion. Residents would have known the city as a religious headquarters that was being drawn, quickly and uneasily, into the wider commerce of the country.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Salt Lake City, Utah, drawn in 1870. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
