Plate 3 of Prang's Aids for Object Teaching turns a tailor's trade into a classroom lesson, showing tailoring as a skill children could study and name. L. Prang & Co., the Boston firm run by the German-born printer Louis Prang, produced these large color lithographs in the 1870s for use in schools, where the object-teaching movement encouraged students to learn from pictures and real things rather than from memorized text. The series also documented everyday work at a time when many Americans still made or mended their own clothes, and when tailoring was shifting toward shops and workshops. The print was later included in a 2005-2006 exhibition on the garment industry and American Jewry.
