Governor James V. Allred, who led Texas from 1935 to 1939, appears here in a halftone print that pairs him with horses, a subject closely tied to the state's ranching identity. The record dates it only tentatively to around 1940, so the exact occasion is unclear. The print came from Underwood & Underwood, a New York firm known for news and press photographs, and the halftone process made such images cheap to reproduce in newspapers and magazines. Viewers should keep in mind that the image is a commercial product of its time, shaped by how officials and the press wanted Texas to be seen.
