Its title turns the most famous recruiting call of 1914 into a family joke. "Your Country Needs You," the pointing Lord Kitchener poster that appeared in British newspapers and on hoardings that summer, became one of the most recognized images of the war, and this piece borrows its direct, personal address to suggest that the nation's appeal was being passed down through generations. The idiom "a chip of the old block" means a son who takes after his father, so the pun works on two levels: it is about recruitment and about inherited duty. Pictures like this one show how quickly the government's wartime imagery was taken up, copied and reworked by the press and by ordinary people in Britain.
