This lithograph is notable for its French title, "Achetez des timbres d'épargne de guerre" (Buy War Savings Stamps), which points to an appeal aimed at French-speaking Canadians as well as English-speaking ones. Canada's government sold low-denomination savings stamps during the First World War to draw small household savings into the war effort, and posters like this one urged ordinary citizens to lend their money to the state. Printed in 1915, the poster reflects how the war was being fought on the home front as well as overseas, with civilians asked to finance it through everyday purchases.
