A 1916 French poster for the Journée nationale des orphelins, or National Orphans Day, it is dated by its title, "1914-15-16," which marks the first years of the war. France had by then lost hundreds of thousands of men, leaving large numbers of children without fathers, and public days of appeal like this one raised money for their care. The lithograph is signed by C.H. Foerster, and its subject, orphanhood and grief, reflects how openly wartime posters addressed loss at home. The print is 120 by 79 centimeters.
