The frame shown here belongs to Aerodrome A, the heavier-than-air machine that Samuel Pierpont Langley's team was building at the Smithsonian, and the record dates the photograph to January 31, 1900. The view is of the bare structure, with the framework that would carry the wings, engine, and launch apparatus exposed for the camera. Langley, the Smithsonian's secretary, died in 1906, and this halftone appeared as plate 46 in the 1911 memoir on his mechanical flight experiments, published to document that work. Looking at the frame itself shows how much of early aviation depended on lightweight metal and wood construction.
