Devenish Island sits in Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, and this view shows the ruined monastic buildings that have stood there since the early medieval period. The site was founded in the sixth century by St. Molaise, and its round tower, one of the tallest surviving in Ireland, has long been its most recognizable feature. The picture was made with the photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed color images from several stone plates, so the stonework and surrounding water carry a painted quality. Such prints were popular with travelers in the 1890s who wanted a souvenir of places they had visited.
