Labeled as a Ngolok chief, this portrait comes from *Scenes in Tibet*, a set of photographs made on Ernest Schäfer's expeditions to Tibet in the 1930s. The Ngolok, a nomadic Tibetan people of the eastern highlands, were long known to outsiders for their independence, and a picture identifying one of their leaders offers a rare glimpse of that world. The date of roughly 1930 to 1931 comes from an unverified caption card, so the exact moment remains uncertain. Schäfer, a German zoologist, traveled through the region during these years, and his photographs are valued for recording remote highland communities.
