Few posters from the first decade of the twentieth century promote a university's athletics as directly as this color piece advertising Yale's track and field program. Printed around 1908 and copyrighted by Charles W. Beck Jr., it bears the artist's pictograph in place of a written signature. Intercollegiate sport, Yale's included, drew wide public interest in these years, and promotional work like this was meant to build school loyalty and attract attention to athletic events. Its bold color and simplified figures reflect the graphic style of commercial posters of the period.
