Rather than a scene, this is a route map of the Boston & Lowell Railroad, showing its main line north from Boston and the connecting lines that joined it. The company was chartered in 1830 and opened to Lowell in 1835, making it one of the earliest railroads in New England and a vital link to the textile mills on the Merrimack River. Its tracks carried raw cotton inward and finished cloth outward, tying Boston's markets to the fast-growing mill city. The railroad was absorbed into the Boston and Maine system in 1887, so a map like this records a network that no longer exists under its original name.
