Its title, "Another Notch," alludes to the old practice of cutting a mark into a rifle stock for each enemy killed, and the subject headings tie it to Château-Thierry, the French town where American forces fought in the summer of 1918. Adolph Treidler made the lithograph in 1917, as the United States was entering the war and the Marine Corps was recruiting heavily. Treidler was a prolific commercial illustrator, and his posters often used bold, simplified figures to win the attention of passersby. Worth noticing is how the poster pairs a frontier-style trophy with a modern war, a tension that was central to how recruiting messages were pitched to young men.
