This lithograph pairs the name of General John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, with the slogan "Make every minute count." Adolph Treidler produced it in 1917 for the United States Shipping Board's Emergency Fleet Corporation, the agency created that year to build merchant ships quickly after the United States entered the war in April. The message was direct: the army overseas depended on ships to carry men and supplies across the Atlantic, so every hour lost in the shipyards delayed the fighting. The poster is a good example of how wartime industry used the public face of military leaders to press home the urgency of civilian work.
