Arnold Genthe, the German-born photographer known for his street portraits of San Francisco's Chinatown, made this print under a title that points to one of the neighborhood's rougher corners. "The Devil's Kitchen" was a nickname for a stretch of the district's alleys and tenements, a name that reflected how outsiders viewed the crowded quarter at the time. The caption card gives no date, so the exact year is uncertain, but Genthe worked there in the early 1900s, a period when the district's residents often faced harsh scrutiny from city officials and the press.
