Few pictures in the Bain collection name a place as old as this one. The title points to Trau, the Italian name for the Dalmatian town now called Trogir on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, and to the Camerlengo Castle that guards its harbor. The fortress dates to the 15th century, when Venetian authorities ruled the town and fortified its waterfront. The Bain News Service, a New York agency active from about 1899 to 1932, distributed images like this one to newspapers and buyers. The record gives no date, and the title comes from the original negative or caption card, so it has not been independently verified.
