Little is recorded about this view beyond its title, Fiume, which names the Adriatic port now called Rijeka in Croatia. The Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its caption data is unverified, so the date and exact street remain uncertain. Fiume changed hands several times in the years the agency was active, passing from Hungarian to Italian control after the First World War, which kept the city in the news. The scene offers a glimpse of everyday urban life in that unsettled period.
