Yosemite Falls, the twin cascades that drop roughly 2,400 feet from the rim of the Yosemite Valley, is the subject here, rendered in hand-colored lithography by Currier & Ives. The firm, based in New York, produced these inexpensive color prints for a broad middle-class market, and its views of western scenery helped American audiences picture landscapes most of them would never see in person. Yosemite Valley had only recently been set aside by Congress in 1864 as a protected grant, which gave such images added public interest. The print is cataloged in Gale Research's raisonné of the firm's work, a useful reference for tracing its date and production.
