Few posters of the 1890s carry the name of a painter as respected as Arthur Wesley Dow, whose design was printed by the Boston firm of L. Prang to promote *Modern Art*, a periodical edited by J.M. Bowles. Prang was a leading American publisher of color lithographs, and the magazine aimed to bring good design into homes and schools. Dow, a painter and printmaker who taught at Pratt Institute and later at Teachers College, Columbia, favored flat color and simple arrangements, qualities that fit the decorative arts reform of the period. The catalog details for this poster are unverified, so the 1895 date should be treated as provisional.
