Few sporting events of the 1890s drew as much attention as the heavyweight title bout between James J. Corbett and Bob Fitzsimmons, held in Carson City, Nevada, on March 17, 1897. Corbett, the defending champion, had taken the title from John L. Sullivan in 1892, and the match pitted his polished footwork against Fitzsimmons's hard-hitting, unorthodox style. Fitzsimmons won by knockout in the 14th round, and the fight was also filmed, one of the earliest sporting events captured on motion picture. Images like this one capture the period when prizefighting was drawing large crowds and heavy newspaper coverage.
