The title places a group of suffragists on their way to Boston, a detail that points to the Massachusetts campaign for women's voting rights, which drew support and opposition across New England in the early twentieth century. The glass negative is undated, and the title comes from caption cards written by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency whose information was not independently verified, so the exact occasion remains uncertain. Bain's photographers recorded many public events of the period, and images like this one show how the suffrage movement took its arguments onto roads and railways between cities before the Nineteenth Amendment was ratified in 1920.
