Boston Garter was the trade name of a men's and women's accessory line, and this picture sells the Velvet Grip, a garter clasp that held a stocking up with a padded pad against the leg and a button-style fastener at the top. Ads like this one ran in magazines and on store displays in the early twentieth century, when stockings were typically held up by elastic garters or suspenders and comfort and grip were the main selling points. Look closely at how the clasp is drawn; the illustration is meant to show the mechanism as much as the product. It offers a useful glimpse of how everyday underwear was marketed to ordinary households.
