The poster promotes a 1936 California production of Benn W. Levy's play *The Devil Passes*, a work by the London-born playwright (1900-1973) that the Federal theater Project presented during the Depression. The Federal theater Project was created in 1935 as part of the Works Progress Administration to employ theater workers, and its poster units produced silkscreen advertisements like this one for local productions. Notice the flat, layered color fields, a hallmark of the silkscreen method, which allowed artists to print bold graphics cheaply in large runs.
