This silkscreen poster advertises *The Devil Passes*, a 1936 Los Angeles production sponsored by the Federal theater Project, the arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed theater workers during the Depression. Its designer, Benn Wolfe Levy, worked in the WPA's poster program, which used inexpensive screen printing to promote stage shows across the country. Federal theater productions were often staged for low admission prices, so posters like this one were meant to draw ordinary audiences to the theater. The image shows how the program's artists adapted modern graphic design to advertise live performance.
