The only name recorded for this portrait is T. Aiken, and the May 31, 1911 date comes from an unverified caption card, so the sitter's identity and role remain uncertain. The image was made by Harris & Ewing, the Washington, D.C., studio founded in 1905 by George W. Harris and Richard Ewing, which became one of the busiest portrait businesses in the capital and photographed many officials and public figures. The print was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office as a photoprint, a deposit method that kept a copy of each photograph on file for copyright purposes.
