Taken on March 4, 1861, the picture shows the inaugural procession moving past a gate on the Capitol grounds as Abraham Lincoln took the oath of office. The Capitol was still unfinished, with its dome under construction, and the city was tense as Southern states had already seceded. Troops and guards were posted throughout Washington that day, so the scene reflects both a ceremonial transfer of power and the uncertainty of the moment.
